What Is Bronchitis Caused By: Bronchitis Causes

Acute bronchitis is generally caused by viruses, typically the exact same viruses that cause colds and flu (influenza). Antibiotics do not kill viruses, so this type of drug isn't useful in most cases of bronchitis. The most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking cigs.

What is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis (bronKItis) is a condition in which the bronchial tubes become inflamed. Both chief kinds of bronchitis are acute (short term) and chronic (continuing). Chronic bronchitis is a serious, long term medical condition.

Most People Who Have Chronic Bronchitis Have Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

Tobacco smoking is the most common cause, with a number of other factors for example air pollution and genetics and a smaller part playing. Symptoms of chronic bronchitis may include wheezing and shortness of breath, especially. Smoking cigarettes or other forms of tobacco cause most cases of chronic bronchitis. Also, long-term inhalation of air pollution or irritating fumes or dust from hazardous exposures in vocations like coal mining, grain handling, textile manufacturing, livestock farming, and metal moulding can also be a risk factor for the development of chronic bronchitis. Unlike other common obstructive ailments for example asthma or emphysema, bronchitis rarely causes a high residual volume (the volume of air remaining in the lungs after a maximal exhalation effort).

Bronchitis Symptoms & Treatment

Acute bronchitis is generally due to viruses, typically precisely the same viruses that cause colds and influenza (infuenza). Antibiotics don't kill viruses, so this kind of drug isn't useful in most cases of bronchitis. Many of the symptoms of bronchitis are because of the body attempting to clear the bronchial tubes. Such symptoms include: Symptoms of acute bronchitis generally enhance with a day or two, although a nagging cough may linger for a few weeks. However, depending on the type of your symptoms, medications may be prescribed by the physician including: Depending on the severity of your symptoms and/or risk factors a visit to a doctor may be a good idea. Acute bronchitis is generally due to precisely the same viruses that cause the flu and a cold, so take similar precautions as you would to protect yourself from these sicknesses including: Chronic bronchitis is activated by personal lifestyle choices and environmental factors including smoking, air pollution, irritant exposure at work, severe heartburn, and more.

The study - led by Cardiff University in the UK - shows for the first time the calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) plays a key role in causing the airway disorder. Daniela Riccardi, principal investigator and a professor in Cardiff's School of Biosciences, describes their findings as "unbelievably exciting," because for the very first time they've linked airway inflammation - which may be activated for example by cigarette smoke and car fumes - with airway twitchiness. She adds: "Our paper shows how these triggers release chemicals that activate CaSR in airway tissue and drive asthma symptoms like airway twitchiness, inflammation, and narrowing.

Prof. Riccardi concludes: The researchers believe their findings about the function of CaSR in airway tissue could have important implications for other respiratory conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis. The researchers, from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, believe their findings will lead to treatments for a variety of diseases including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis and even certain cancers.
