Dust Allergy Bronchitis: Horse Allergic Bronchitis

Dust Allergy Bronchitis: Horse Allergic Bronchitis

Allergic bronchitis is the most common reaction by horses to allergens and may eventually progress into a condition called "Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease" or COPD. When a critical point is reached by the levels of dust, pollen, fungal spores, or other inhalants, the allergic reaction ends in the release of histamines, causing the bronchiolar muscles to spasm and generate the symptoms of the condition. Symptoms of allergic bronchitis contain an increased amount of viscous mucus that is thick that may obstruct some of airways or the small bronchioles in the lungs. Hay, grain, and bedding are important sources of particles and mold spores in the barn atmosphere. The perfect stable for a horse with allergic bronchitis is an open field.

Dogs with suspected chronic bronchitis are usually treated with antibiotics to look after any infection that might also be present, and something is prescribed for allergies and inflammation in the lungs. Prednisone is a type of cortisone that generally works well to reduce the inflammation of the airways that results from allergies that are active and also helps reduce mucus accumulation in the lungs, even if allergies are no longer part of the issue. Allergy shots can be given to dogs like people, but while this approach will reduce allergies that were aggressive in many dogs, it will not reduce the residual inflammation that remains in the lungs as an effect of prior damage from long-term allergies or irritation from environmental sources like dust and smoke.
